Maintain an asset register

Record the user, model, serial number, purchase date, warranty, installed software and major repairs for each device.

Protect and test backups

Backups should run automatically where possible and restoration should be tested. One copy should be separated from the main computer or network.

Apply updates safely

Keep operating systems, browsers, security tools and business applications supported and updated. Test major changes where business risk is high.

Inspect hardware and power

Clean ventilation, check storage health, review battery and UPS condition and replace damaged cables.

Review accounts and access

Remove departed users, use strong authentication, limit administrator rights and document ownership of shared services.

Schedule professional review

Regular preventive maintenance is normally less disruptive than waiting for complete failure.
