Use price ranges as a starting point
A budget is useful, but it should not replace the specification checklist. Two laptops at a similar price can have different processor generations, SSD sizes, battery condition, screen quality and warranty.
Entry-level priorities
For basic office and school work, prioritise a reliable SSD, enough RAM and a keyboard and battery that are in usable condition. Avoid paying mainly for appearance while accepting very old hardware.
Mid-range priorities
A stronger processor, sixteen gigabytes of RAM, a larger SSD and a better display can improve useful life. Business-class refurbished models may compete with newer consumer models, but condition must be documented.
Performance budgets
Engineering, design, editing and gaming may require dedicated graphics, stronger cooling and a high-wattage charger. Compare the exact graphics model and workload requirements.
Always compare total cost
Include accessories, delivery, setup, software, upgrades and warranty in the final decision.
