UPS Buying Guide for Unstable Power

Choose backup power by load, runtime, battery condition and the equipment that must shut down safely.

Define the protected load

List the computer, monitor, router, switch or other equipment that must remain powered. Do not size a UPS only by the desktop label.

Decide the required runtime

A UPS may provide enough time for safe shutdown or longer operation, depending on capacity and load. Longer runtime requires more battery capacity.

Protect critical equipment

Use suitable surge protection and proper electrical installation. Printers with heaters can draw high power and may not belong on a small UPS.

Maintain the battery

UPS batteries age and should be tested and replaced when capacity falls. Keep ventilation clear and document maintenance for business installations.
